Fact of the Day

More Information

The reason for the new name was to bypass the stigma that came along with the old name, psychotomimetic (psy-kato-meh-'metik), which implied mental illness of some sort. Psychiatrist Humphrey Osmond and writer Aldous Huxley thought that the name needed to be more fitting. In couple of letters sent between the two the term was coined: Huxley: "To make this trivial world sublime,
Take half a Gramme of phanerothyme." Osmond: "To fathom hell or soar angelic
Just take a pinch of psychedelic." (Acid Dreams)
Psychedelic means mind-manifesting.
