Fact of the Day

More Information

Otto Schnering and his Curtiss Candy Company renamed their Kandy Kake the Baby Ruth in 1921 (Snopes). By this time Babe Ruth had played for the Boston Red Sox and was currently playing for the New York Yankees. Basically, Babe Ruth was already somewhat famous when the candy bar came out.
Babe Ruth soon began to receive candy wrappers in the mail which his fans wanted autographed (Ask Yahoo). When faced with a lawsuit as to whether Babe Ruth should receive royalties, the candy company plead that the name was from Grover Cleveland's late daughter Ruth. Oddly enough, she died way back in 1904 (New York Times).
Today Nestle owns the candy bar and has gone in a new (historically hypocritical) direction with the brand identity. The new logo was updated to look more MLB and the connection was consummated when the image of the baseball great was used to sell the bar in the 1990s (New York Times).
