Fact of the Day

More Information

Jimmy Carter was the first president to be born in a hospital because he was born in 1924. A hundred years before his birth a feminist movement of midwives helped women to not fear solitude and even death during pregnancy. Before this time women were left to give birth on their own, and many didn't make it. The midwifery plan eventually led to a third stage of improvement in the 1920s, hospitalization during pregnancy.

Martin van Buren was the first president to be born a US citizen. This is because all of the other presidents before him were born before the United States existed. Oddly enough, is also the only other president to have spoken English as a second language. As one can infer by his name, it was Dutch (as he was born in Upstate New York).

Andrew Johnson never went to school. His wife Eliza McCardle taught him to read and write. He never made it to school because his family was too poor . He instead became a tailor's apprentice.

Other presidential firsts:
Richard Nixon was the first president to resign from office.
Abraham Lincoln was the first US president to be assassinated.
