Fact of the Day More Information Apparently children don't appreciate their fathers enough to pay for a chance to speak with them. Phone companies report that the daily average of collect calls raises significantly on Father's Day compared to ever other day in a given year.
When compared to Mother's Day, Father's Day severely lacks participation. Greeting cards sales make almost twice as much revenue (in hundreds of millions of dollars) on Mother's Day than on Father's Day (Business Week). Its is unclear of whether this is because of father's not wanting cards or because there are more prominent mother figures than father figures in modern society. Family-type trending shows a rise in single-mother households.
Another theory simply judges the numbers on the age of each holiday. Mother's Day stems from the late 1800s while Father's Day was instated as recently as the 1970s under Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon.
"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."
