Fact of the Day More Information Sylvester Graham is of the "Graham Cracker" fame. Kellogg's family created the iconic corn flakes that are still popular today. Both of these men viewed masturbation as did most people at the time; negatively. The names for masturbation included "self abuse" and "self pollution." Kellogg has actually been quoted as proudly stating that he had never had sex with his wife. Graham is quoted as saying that "a masturbator grows up 'with a body full of disease, and with a mind in ruins, the loathsome habit still tyrannizing over him, with the inexorable imperiousness of a fiend of darkness.'"
Graham also advocated moderate sexual activity. Married couples should have sex "no more than 12 times a year." The prudish scaring of the time made things like cold bran cereal and granola some of the most popular foodstuffs. Nuns from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church started adding anti-masturbatory literature and an institute that was taken over by Kellogg.
Kellogg also tried to take credit for inventing peanut butter, bought up the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company's stock and the name was changed to Kellogg's.
