Fact of the Day

More Information

As they were heavy wine drinkers, the Greeks and later the Romans wore wreaths made of parsley in order to drink excessively without getting drunk. (I'm sure the parsley wreath makers created plenty of seasoned drinkers.) Ironically, the ancients did not consume parsley. For mythological reasons they believed that it was a representation of death and physically avoided eating it. It was also feared that mothers nursing newborns who ate parsley would produce seizing children.
