Fact of the Day

More Information

In what is today Syria, archaeologists found a cuneiform-covered Bronze Age tablet from the city of Ugarit (Ras Shamra). Included on it is a song in a form of written music and a description of how it should be played.
Archaeologists and "musicologists" are categorizing the song as a "hymn" [source]. It was written for the lunar goddess Nikal. Accompanying the music were directions for the vocalist and harpist.
The song is entitled The Prayer of an Infertile Woman and can be heard here performed by not your average infertile woman, Dr. Theo J. H. Krispijn.
The tablet was discovered in two separate halves over 20 years apart from one another. The lyrics are written in a language called Hurrian and it may have been an antique by the time it made it to Syria [source].
