Fact of the Day More Information Many lizards are equipped with places to store blood in their sinuses. This helps the lizard warm up small amounts of blood in the face in order to quickly recirculate warmth to the body; typically in the morning [earthsky.org].
The American horned lizard is able to reroute this blood to its tear ducts and spray it in defense. Why would this come in handy? First off, the blood spay is mixed with things that make it severely unpleasant to any animals of the canine order. When something like a fox or a dog comes to eat it, the horned lizard waits until its head is completely enveloped in the mouth of its prey to release the blood [source, source].
If all goes according to plan, the canine will release the lizard, cower in disgust, and move along.
