Fact of the Day More Information Marco d'Aviano was a Capuchin monk. In the 1680s, the pope called on Marco and his fellow friars to rally the Catholic troops in Vienna. The Ottoman Turks had already occupied the city and the church saw the Capuchin monks as their last resort.
d'Aviano successfully united the christian forces in the area to miraculously drive off the massive amount of Turks. When the enemy had cleared out of the city, locals found left over sacks filled with strong coffee which they diluted into what is today known as cappuccino. [source]
The BBC adds that the coffee, toned down with honey and cream, may have taken the name cappuccino due to the similar color it shares with the Capuchin-monk-brown garb worn by the friars.
