Fact of the Day
Archeological sites in Iran and Mesopotamia have yielded evidence of early wine production that goes as far back as the year 5500 BC. Egypt did not jump on the winemaking bandwagon until after 3000 BC. Neolithic hot spots like Shulaveri in Georgia make it to the top of the list with the oldest known evidence of grape cultivation and winemaking, just around the turn of the millennia in 6000 BC.
Many Georgians also believe that their word for wine is the ultimate root of the word in almost all modern, regional languages. In Georgian the word is gvino and if you've ever studied an Indo-European language besides English you know that this theory has some credence.
The Spanish brought grapes and winemaking to the New World in order to hold proper Roman Catholic mass.
