Fact of the Day

More Information

In the late 1890s, Bayer started advertising to physicians about their new Bayer Heroin. It was considered a cough suppressant and pain relived at the time. Oddly enough to our modern perspectives, many of the first recipients of Bayer Heroin were children. It was truely the Dimetap of its time. The AMA (American Medical Association) approved the drug as a "non-addictive morphene" alternative. Bayer stopped making the heroin about 13 years after the turn of the century but the drug was still legally rampant for the next 10 years (source: mentalfloss.com).
