Fact of the Day

More Information

Bluefields, Nicaragua lies in a geographically and politically lucky area. Colombia's cocaine traffickers need to cruise through the waters between the Caribbean Islands and Central America in order to reach the payday that is the continental United States. The currents in these waters cause many things to wash up on Nicaragua's shores. When US coast guards pursue the drug boats, contraband is usually unloaded overboard as soon as possible. Luckily for Bluefields, the cocaine is wrapped water tight and is nice and buoyant. Nature does the rest of the work as bails of cocaine travel westward and wind up on a bunch of small surrounding islands as well as Nicaragua proper. Traffickers posing as local merchants by the cocaine back from Bluefields residents [source].
All monetary dealings are dependent on the cocaine catch and it is not out of the ordinary for Natives to go from rags to riches in a day's time. Those who used to make a living off of crustaceans now search for what they call the "white lobster" [source].
