Fact of the Day

More Information

Classic pizza was originally created in the image of the Italian flag. The red, white, and green of the tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil respectively made the dish quite patriotic. This is actually why the royalty took such a liking towards the dish in the first place. Additionally, this style of pizza is today affectionately referred to as margarita. The explanation for this is simple, the king and queen of the time (1889) were King Umberto and Queen Margherita.
The first American pizzeria is still up and running today. Of course, New York City and more specifically Little Italy is its home. Lombardi's, at 32 Spring Street, was opened by Gennaro Lombardi around the turn of the century. NYC officially made Lombardi's America's first pizzeria in 1905. [source]
