Fact of the Day

More Information

Exactly halfway in between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox is this holiday called Imbolog, today's February 2nd. This was a pressing holiday for agriculturally bound people's trying to predict the weather. It was not so much about a rodent's shadow, but more about what the weather was like on the day and from there making an assessment as to how the rest of the season will work out. Imbolog/Candlemas was brought down from England and Scotland when Rome had jurisdiction over Germanic lands.
German immigrants brought the then badger-shadow to the New World where groundhogs were used instead.
