In the 1920s and 30s, the major department store retailers like Macy's and others started to create a following for the Black Friday tradition. This is when the holiday shopping season officially started starting after Thanksgiving.
When the Pilgrims landed in 1620 some of the Wampanoag Indians greeted them with the word "welcome." Besides explorers like Hudson and Verrazano (1500s), the Wampanoag had come in contact with cod fisherman off the coast of Massachusetts. More than a handful of the Indians spoke English when the colonists arrived. Squanto was captured by the English, sold to Spain as a slave, found his way back to England and hopped a boat back to the New World. For this reason he was familiar with Europeans [video].
In Canada, Thanksgiving in the second Monday in October because of the more northern climate. American Thanksgiving has gone through a bunch of date changes. One in particular had to do with the department store retailers again as well as president Roosevelt in 1939. The merchants petitioned the president to make the holiday a week earlier in order to extend the shopping season even further. Roosevelt agreed. The Congress called the move "Franksgiving" [video]. He realized that it was a messed up thing to do and made it officially the fourth Thursday.
