Fact of the Day

More Information

In 1971, the first of the scientific ventures to the moon, Apollo 14 was deployed carrying Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell. Once on the surface of the moon, the pair spent nine hours walking around collecting rocks and exploring [source]. At one point Shepard revealed what he had smuggled, a six iron, 3 golf balls and a javelin for tossing. As he hit the first two balls he declared that they must be traveling miles and miles [video].
The javelin and the extra golf ball still remain lying on the moon about where the mission landed (Fra Mauro). And later, once home, Shepard did the math and figured out that the golf balls only traveled about 400 yards.
