Fact of the Day More Information With the honey bee population shrinking significantly since the early 1980s, more light has been shone on independent bees. In recent times there have been emergency importations of honey bee hives from other countries to the United States. People are now turning to those without hives or honey that already reside in America. These so-called leaf-cutting bees live in holes by themselves. Fortunately, they do still help pollinate flowers and may be the savior for many an American crop farmer.
With no specific domain and clan to protect, these loner bees are quite apprehensive to sting humans. Female solitary bees are the ones that do most of the pollination because they require it for their eggs during pregnancy.
If the shrinking-bee-population problem is not solved, we will need to find new ways to keep crop farms populated to meet the demand created over the years in the American and global marketplaces.
