Fact of the Day More Information In annexing the land needed for Central Park, many quaint neighborhoods and ways of life were completely abolished. The area of central Manhattan around 1850 was inhabited by German gardeners and Irish pig farmers [source]. In an area between 82nd & 89th Street and 7th & 8th Avenue was a place called Seneca Village. It was mostly owned by African Americans but included the Irish and Germans from before as well as a handful of Native Americans. Over 250 residents, 3 churches, and a school in all, the neighborhood was raised and is now part of Central Park [source].
Many rules kept the poor out of the park when it was first opened. Over time it has become public domain, a true backyard for New York City.
