Fact of the Day

More Information

The Barbie doll stood for the Cold War ideal of an American women. She began to stand for the nation's policies as a whole; with boobs figuratively named freedom and democracy. She was clearly female with no ambiguity about it, which is another social ideal from the time. In a sense, Barbie was the bomb dropped onto the American people in order to unify them under one image.
In actuality, Barbie as the ideal woman would create someone unnaturally tall without enough girth to bear healthy children. This gross misinterpretation of the female body image has been linked to diseases like anorexia in young girls trying to look like their favorite Barbie. The Barbie's shape has been almost 100% untouched since it debuted back in the late-50s-early-60s.
