More Information  

Over 350 years after that 1633 verdict, Pope John Paul II changed the church's stance against Galileo. Back in the 1600s, the Roman Catholic Church actually threatened Galileo with death via burning at the stake; as would be the punishment of a common heretic. Galileo's work, in which he revealed his controversial evidence supporting Copernicus's theories, was unbanned by the church sometime in the 1700s. Astonishingly, 8 years shy of the 21st century, the church finally came around to believe the now scientifically obvious. relatedFAQ
