Cyanide is actually released when cherry twigs and leaves are consumed. It is said that wilted, dying leaves are even more potent in terms of the fatal cyanide within. During storms in the Midwest, many farm animals are found dead after eating the remnants of cherry trees that made there way onto the pastures. Many of the humans who are afflicted with the cyanide poisoning go through a period where they are constantly gasping for air. After/during that the victim experiences what is called excitement, but better known today as hysteria. This is followed by sluggishness, increased body temperature, and vomiting. Commonly the victim is left motionless and lying down in an attempt to rest. After such one may succumb to coma or lose the battle right there.
