Fact of the Day More Information Originally found on the South American continent, tomatoes were not known outside of Native America until the Spanish made it there in the 14-1500s. The leader of the Aztecs, Montezuma, had gardens of tomatoes and the Spanish first brought them to Europe as decorative plants. Probably both yellow and red colored at the time, Europeans saw them as poisonous berries. Many of the names tomatoes were called when the reached Europe considered them of the apple family.
After the stigma started to leave, things made from tomatoes (like ketchup) were considered medicines. The canned soup industry pushed tomatoes to a staple of the everyday diet.
