Fact of the Day

More Information

Rock drawings have been found on the Hawaiian islands showing stick figures on surfboards. When the sport was created, it had a lot to do with the politics of the time. Longer and lighter boards were reserved for the king and select others. Novice riders were given heavier shorter boards made out of specific materials that depended on the future of the indiviual's place in society. Failure to complete the surfing task at hand was considered disgraceful and disrespectful. It is also said that Kings were the ones allotted the largest waves to surf on. Westerners saw surfing for the first time in 1779. Captain King's account made its way to Europe soon after.
