Fact of the Day More Information Janet Leigh (the woman being stabbed) was only shown in key places on her body like her head, hands, and stomach. This was done so that she didn't have to sit through filming a shower scene in the buff; god forbid. Other shots of the body are of a model who was hired to be naked. The sound effects for the murder were actually recordings of stabbing fruit. Famous artist 1" target="_blank">Saul Bass, who designed the opening credits for this movie and other Hitchcocks, is also rumored to have helped on the montage aspect of the shower scene. There is footage of him on the set but none of the other parties believe that he help on the final cut.
The blood in the shower scene did not need to be red in black and white cinematography. Chocolate syrup was actually sprayed all over the shower and actresses.
