Soon after this reputation made its way far and wide, the oysters started selling off the shelves to places such as London and Paris [source]. Eventually every last oysters was scraped from the seabed and the oyster craze was over. Today, Staten Island houses an garbage dump that you can make out from space with the naked eye. And sewage pumps into the water that was once a rich oyster ecosystem.
