Fact of the Day

More Information

Mandarin Chinese (中国文) is sitting pretty at the top with over 1,075,000,000 people speaking the language natively. Next on the list is English which, despite all of its influence, has less than half that of Mandarin at about 500 million speakers. A mix of the languages in Pakistan and India make up slot 3. This is despite that fact that Hindustani includes both Hindi and Urdu. Thanks to Spanish exploration in North South, Central America and elsewhere, Español follows for the number four spot. Places like the Philippines and Mexico still have the peso as their currency. To close off the top five we have the Russian language (Руссий Язык) at almost 300 million.
6-10 are Arabic (Mideast/North Africa/other Muslim nations), Bengali (Asian Sub-continent), Portuguese (Europe/Brazil/many spots around the world on the coast thanks to exploration: Goa, India; Macao, China), Malay Indonesian, and last but not least, French thanks to its influence in Africa, French Indochina, use in some space-stations, and some time as the universal world language.
