Fact of the Day More Information The main myth is that as the Julian calendar was switched to the modern Gregorian version the date chosen to change on was New Years. Although it was actually April 1st by new standards, many either didn't care or didn't realize and celebrated it as January 1st. This was seen as foolish and hence the name. This all happened in France around 1582.
Many have come to the conclusion that since many years before the calendar switch in the 1500s, people from cultures all around the world had a season of lightheartedness around the beginning of April, that it has more to do with the reemergence of spring from the cold of winter. This is also called the vernal equinox. View All Facts View Images View Maps Blog
