Fact of the Day
This stormy and gaseous planet produces its radio waves in its magnetosphere. It is said that the magnetic field around Jupiter is so large that it reaches the sun. Also if it were ever possible to view the magnetic field around Jupiter from Earth it would be as large if not larger than a full moon. When you realize how much further away Jupiter is from Earth than the moon you begin to get a feel for the massiveness of this magnetosphere.
When the field comes into contact with the sun or even as the moon Io travels around Jupiter radio waves are not only emitted but can be tuned into on Earth by almost anyone with very limited technology needed. Radiosky.com gives samples of what can be haerd from earth. L Bursts are said to sound like waves crashing on a beach or the sound a seashell makes when placed on the ear [relatedFAQ]. When the sun is added to the mix the sounds are reminiscent of launching fireworks, these are called S Bursts.
