Fact of the Day More Information For some time it was believed that glass was completely liquid with an extraordinary high viscosity. This thought somewhat came about because of the stained glass windows on churches from the Middle Ages. Commonly, panes on the bottom of the stained glass murals were thicker and heavier than those at the top. People believed that the glass was simply victim to gravity. Research has now been done and it was discovered that it would take hundreds of years at a constant temperature quite a bit hotter than is found at or around the medieval churches of Europe.
The reality is that as an amorphous solid, glass has a crystal structure that is not arranged in a definite structure. Like plastic and gels, amorphous solids look like liquid in a frozen state at room temperature.
