Fact of the Day More Information After hearing the sound of someone playing wine glasses, Benjamin Franklin was moved to the point of considering its melodies as the voice of angles. As the master inventor that he was, this new instrument led him to try and perfect a self spinning machine to compose on it more easily than many individual glasses with different water levels. The armonica was what looked like a row of bowls set up on their side as they would be in a dishwasher. A foot petal spun the bowls and moistened fingers could freely change notes by simply moving their hands left and right, from bowl to bowl.
The instrument became flooded in popularity in the states and soon had a similar reception over in Europe. The armonica got so large that greats like Mozart and Beethoven wrote compositions exclusively for the instrument.
The erie sound given off by the armonica eventually got to people and superstition deemed it evil on the grounds of something like the screaming sounds of dead souls came out of it and killed those who dared play. View All Facts View Images View Maps Blog
