More Information

Besides the obvious loss of land due to beach erosion, money is now an issue solved by the jetties as well. In places where the coastline is bought up or where an entry fee is charged to get onto the beach, jetties help preserve more real estate for prospective land buyers and beach bums alike. Beach-goers may enjoy the calm atmosphere of smaller waves due to jetties, but surfers must be annoyed by the buzz-kill (besides the fact that they are jagged obstacles for anyone cruising by on a board).

Sometimes, jetties are set up at the mouth of a harbor in order to minimize waves. Again this can be done for financial reasons being that a harbor is like a private parking lot for sailboats; more waves mean less renters.
