This is a common experiment among school children but the reasoning is quite interesting. Sugar plays a major role in determining the soda can's buoyancy. 39 grams of sugar are present in a classic can of Coke. This compared to the 85mg of artificial sweetener in Diet Coke makes the Classic Coke can sink to the bottom. When demonstrated correctly, the amount of sugar is obviously heavier looking that the Nutrasweet/aspartame.
