Fact of the Day

More Information

European armies used this mixture as a form of chemical warfare during the first World War. Chlorine gas (Cl2) is the main product of such a mixture.

Victims suffer a horrible death of asphyxiation due to cell deterioration.
In World War I, Germany first used chlorine gas on the French troops at Ypres in 1915. Handkerchiefs soaked in urine were used on the mouth and nose to avoid imminent death [source].
Changing the amounts of chlorine and ammonia put into the mixture can produce different chemical compounds. NCl3 and N2H4 are byproducts of the reaction and both are explosive [source].
Trying this at home will probably kill you, use your own discretion.
