Fact of the Day More Information In 1896, the first escalator was displayed at the Coney Island piers. [Newsday] states that 75000 people rode the attraction during its two week debut.
The Dutch settlers in New York referred to the area as Konijn Eiland when it was actually an island of its own. The name means Rabbit Island because it was crawling with rabbits and a known spot to hunt. The English Coney Island comes from Konijn.
The future brings a new face for Coney Island. Land housing aged and rundown part of the parks will be replace by a revamped complex. This new destination will be equipped with canals for boat rides. Luckily, the landmarks that we love are just that: landmarked. The Cyclone and the ferris wheel, and the parachute drop are now preserved by the city and will avoid being raised.
