Fact of the Day
Thought to be related to the now extinct moa, the egg of the kiwi is six times larger than that of other birds of its size. The reason the egg is so large is that it contains a self-sufficient source of nourishment for the chick which can live independently from birth. The kiwi grows to about the size of a farm chicken with chicken feet, and anteater like nose/beak, no tail, and boneless/flightless wings. The nose is extremely sensitive and their diet consists of worms and other stuff from under the soil. The species can only be found in its native New Zealand. Since the egg is so large in proportion to the mother, she experiences some discomfort as her internal organs are pushed aside to make way for baby.
