Fact of the Day More Information In trying to sell his newly invented radio coils, a man named William Lear met radio company mogul Paul Galvin. Lear and one Elmer Wavering collaborated on an effort to design an effective car radio before the 1929 boom. The problem with a radio in a car was the static interference that resulted from spark-plugs. Under Galvin, Lear invented the key component in the car radio: a voltage converter to make a DC car battery properly power AC-current-requiring radios of the time that also simultaneously reduced static interference [source]. Galvin than can up with the name Motorola. Motorola actually states that the term linked "'Motor' (for motorcar) with 'ola' (which implied sound)."
