Fact of the Day

More Information

It is remarkable that in the 200s BC it was possible to mass produce entire true-to-life statues.
This took place during the Qin Dynasty under Qin Shihuandgi. The ancient Chinese had an advanced knowledge of many clay modeling techniques. For instance, the body armor on the statues is made from a mold placed around a pre-shaped clay body. The heads were sculpted by hand with various facial expressions. The army was made to be buried. Found in a giant mausoleum, the Terracotta Army was guarding Qin Shihuandgi in his afterlife. Actual working weapons from the time period have survived because the soldiers were not buried empty handed. The collection also contains horses, chariots, and men of many different ranks.
