Fact of the Day

More Information

Bikini Atoll was an island full of almost isolated people. The island's bay houses a coral reef and a menagerie of sea life. The outside world met the Bikini Islanders in the 1600s (Spanish/German) [source]. The second World War brought the Japanese military. The Japanese were using the island as a lookout for American troops. Eventually, life was completely ruined. The Americans took control of the island after some clashing. The islanders were stuck in the middle of it all until they were forced to leave their homes and were placed on other islands in the area. A series of nuclear tests were done on the island soon after. They ceased in the late 1950s. Relocation of the natives was not smooth. Initial tests proved the island safe for re-habitation of the few remaining residents. In the 70s that was changed and it is still disputed as to whether the food growing on the atoll is safe for human consumption [source].
