Fact of the Day
International orange is a color used for its ability to stand out. On the Golden Gate Bridge, international orange (vermilion) is used for two reasons. First, the orange is very visible to ships passing beneath it; even in the thick San Francisco fog. The second reason is that the color seems to compliment the natural beauty of the area. The Golden Gate is actually the name for the strait that the bridge spans (similar to that of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge spanning the Narrows between Brooklyn and Staten Island in NYC), and has nothing to do with color.
You may also know international orange from those doing community service on the side of the road or from depictions of astronauts out of their spacesuits. Coast guard lifeboats also sport this fashionable hue for obvious reasons.
On the web use FF4F00 or RGB 255, 79, 0 to utilize the color in your work. Also, in the grey box on the right of this page use the hexadecimal FF4F00 in the space after "color" to have a randomFAQ ticker in international orange (remember to click the "generate html code" button to see the result).
