Fact of the Day
Using willow as treatment for aches, pains, and fever is most commonly attributed to Hippocrates (circa 400BC) when in fact the idea was simply passed down to him.
In the mid 1800s it was discovered that salicin was what made the willow beneficial. By 1897, Felix Hoffmann synthesized aspirin as we know it today while working at Bayer. He was motivated to find a cure for his father's arthritis. [sources: 1, 2]
