Fact of the Day More Information Once the male and female bears age to around 4 years, they are ready to reproduce. After breeding, the female bear is left to her own devices in raising her unborn cubs. Knowing this struggle lies ahead, the mother bear eats for 3 or 4. The amount of cubs birthed has to do a lot with the weather and the availability of food. Cubs are often born while the mother is still in hibernation. Commonly, female bears reproduce once every two years; unless she loose some of her offspring. Male bears prey upon cubs as do eagles, wolves, lions, and other large catlike and doglike animals. This is why it is very important for cubs to stay near mom until able to fend for themselves. [sources: 1, 2]
