Fact of the Day More Information Water droplets freeze over dust particles to form the foundation of snowflakes. As each entity falls, it gathers mass with the addition of more and more droplets. Since this formulation is almost completely random, each snowflake has different attributes. As it topples from the sky it is balanced.
Snow is not actually white, it is clear. The reason that it appears blindingly white is the sun's light. The sides of all the ice crystals that make up snowflakes reflect the white light of day.
Since the air's temperature and moisture content play a great part in the creation of snow, the colder it is when it snows the less likely we will be able to make intact snowballs.
