Fact of the Day More Information SGR-1806-20 is a star in the constellation Sagittarius. SGR-1806-20 had a starquake in December of 2004. This quake created the first known cracks in the surface of a star. Its magnetic field measures one million billion Gauss. Unbelievably, the diameter of the star is only 12 miles.
The earth's magnetic field is 0.5 Gauss. A magnet on the refrigerator in your kitchen has a field of about 10 Gauss.
It is said that if the earth were within 10 light years of SGR-1806-20 during the quake, all life would be annihilated. Some satellites were affected by the magnetism. View All Facts View Images View Maps Blog
