Fact of the Day

More Information

The Eiffel Tower was originally built to be temporary. After its debut at the 1889 International Expo it would have been dismantled had it not made such a great military radio tower. In 1893, the World's Columbian Expo was held in Chicago, Illinois. George W. Ferris invented the Ferris Wheel and debuted it at the show in an attempt to stay a step ahead of the French. Mr. Ferris, a civil engineer from Pennsylvania, used the steel structuring style of the Eiffel Tower and added motion and physical entertainment. The wheel was 250 feet tall. Each of the cars held a whopping 60 people and this led to 6-digit profits from a $.50 ticket price. The original wheel has since been scrapped.
