Fact of the Day More Information A series of pipes link reservoirs from upstate New York to NYC's five boroughs. Tunnels one and two went into action at the beginning of the 20th century. The amazing thing about these tunnels is that gravity solely powers the water flow. Tunnel three is being built the same way. It is a soon-to-be-necessary precautionary measure to insure the city has its water supply and pressure in high rises. Tunnels one and two power some fountains in central park, in some cases shooting water over 75 feet in the air. Many people who live in manhattan have no idea let alone notice the construction going on over 400 feet beneath them. Tunnel three will allow the city to stop flow in one and two and repair them for the first time in 90 years. View All Facts View Images View Maps Blog
