Fact of the Day

More Information

Mostly melodramatic shows would feature these ads because their audience is predominantly female. Originally, the ads started on the radio and later migrated to visual form (both the shows and advertisements alike). Broadcast during the day, they were directly aimed at women, most likely doing all of the housework. Although many things have changed, watching TV in the daytime will prove that such ads still come as a packaged deal with melodrama. Speaking of packaged deals, some of the first ads were from the now world-renowned Procter & Gamble. They were plugging Ivory soap.
If you haven't figured it out by now, operas are melodramatic, that's why the word was used.
