Fact of the Day

More Information

The government of Japan regulates the cooking of this fish by licensing the chefs it sees qualified to prepare the dish. There are myths surrounding this dish because, on occasion, when people eat it and apparently die on the spot, some come miraculously back to life days after. In relation to Haitian zombification, this puffer fish chemical is used to make the zombis seem dead so that they can be properly buried. If they come back to life they are dug out and roam the earth.
It would cost a curious eater hundreds of dollars per serving in Japan. As they say, the more deadly the more delicious.
