Fact of the Day

More Information

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit based 0 degrees on the coldest day he knew of at the time. The 100 degree mark is most likely a 1700s-technology fudge-up on the more commonly accepted 98.6. I believe that he saw 100 as a neater number than 98.6 and rounded up and/or edited his superficial 0 degree mark to fit the mold. His main objective in creating the Fahrenheit system was to clean up the contemporary Rømer scale, which had everyday temperature measurements located in the negative. The evenly divisible number 180 is the difference between 0 degrees Fahrenheit and 212 (boiling point).
Fahrenheit is also accredited with the invention of both the alcohol and mercury thermometers. Also, it happens to work out that -40C is equal to -40F.
