Fact of the Day More Information Although the element's life was a mere 9/10,000th of a second, it was created nonetheless. So far it is referred to as ununoctium or 118 and it was created in Russia somewhere along the Volga River banks. Previously, the last element added to the periodic table was roetgenium (#111) in 1994.
Since theory maps out a finite limit to the largest element, scientists are inching closer to the limit and also better understanding the forces on atoms under extreme situations. New elements are created by shooting bits of one atom at another in order to have some of the particles stick. When 20 billion billion atoms of calcium were shot with extreme force, only 3 took to the host (Staten Island Advance). Scientists have given themselves a painstaking task to acomplish.
