Fact of the Day

More Information

Amazon comes from the Greek (Αμαζόνες) word for breastless. Greek folklore places the "tribe" of Amazonian women somewhere in present day Kazakhstan. The rest of their legacy is misconstrued through history and can possibly be fictitious. Art depicting battles of the Greeks verses the Amazons is called Amazonomachy. It became a genre of art in and of itself. It looks like carvings or etchings with the back ground cut away leaving the foreground in 3D.
The Amazon River of South America was named by explorers who saw some buff women warriors bathing themselves in it. Francisco de Orellana, leader of the said explorers, eventually battled the Tapuyas tribe in which these women fought beside their men.
